Star Salad

[20 Minutes]

Use the fresh fruits of summer to create this fun and delicious salad.

You'll need:

• green lettuce leaves • 1/2 slice (1 inch thick) watermelon for each salad • 1/2 cup cottage cheese • 1 Tbsp. fresh blueberries • knife (ADULT USE ONLY) • plates • measuring cup and spoons • spoon
What to do:

1. Let your children help clean lettuce and place on a plate.
2. Cut the watermelon slice into 5 equal wedges. Cut away and throw out the rind.
3. Show the children in your care how to place melon wedges on the lettuce leaves with the points outward to make a star.
4. There will be a hole in the middle. Suggest that your children fill it with cottage cheese. Encourage their suggestions also.
5. Invite your children to sprinkle the blueberries on top of the center of the star.
6. Make several stars and use them as a table decoration for a holiday celebration or for a special meal.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

* Which parts of the star salad do you like? Which parts were crunchy? Chewy? Sweet?
* What other shapes could we make with fruit?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, your children are learning to follow directions and are developing creativity.
