Let's Walk to the Pond

[30 Minutes]

A pond is stocked with interesting things for the children in your care to see. Find a nearby pond and invite your children to take a science-filled walk!

You'll need:

• plastic jar • camera (optional)
What to do:

1. Invite your children to go with you to a nearby pond. Make sure your children stay close by and do not touch anything without your permission.
2. Look into the water to see minnows or tadpoles. Help your children fill their jar with pond water to take back. Explain that minnows are small fish and tadpoles will grow up to be frogs.
3. Sit together quietly and watch the birds, frogs, and insects that surround the pond area. Take pictures for lasting memories.
4. When you return home with the pond water, help your children look at it under a magnifying glass to look for tiny creatures.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

* What things did we see and hear at the pond?
* Did you see any frogs? What sounds do frogs make?
* Did you see any fish? Do fish make sounds?
