Windy Races

Windy Races

[15 Minutes]

You may not be able to see the wind, itself, but you can see what it does. This activity makes the effects of wind "visible."

You'll need:

• straws • piece of paper • cotton ball or other lightweight objects (optional)

What to do:

  1. Invite the children in your care to blow into the palm of their hands. Ask them to describe the feeling?
  2. Now, encourage your children to blow through a straw into the palm of their hand. Did the feeling change? How?
  3. Put a piece of paper on the floor in front of each of you and experiment with blowing to move the paper.
  4. Together, decide upon a distance to blow the paper across. See who can reach the finish line first.
  5. Can your children pick up the paper just using the straw? They will have to inhale. Talk about the difference between inhale and exhale.

How to use:

Encourage your children to experiment by moving different objects by blowing through their straws.

Let's Talk: Ideas to Explore Together.

  • Is it easier to move the paper by inhaling or exhaling? Why?
  • What else could you push by blowing on it?

Useful information:

While you are having fun together, the children in your care are developing an understanding of cause and effect.
